Cargo securing for the economically minded

Spring lashing

This is post number 14 in a series of cargo securing advice and useful hints. These are meant for people who think economically. They do not like to waste time, muscle power, risk their health or pay fines.

Lashing methods Part 3B: Direct lashing with spring lashing

You can use what you have and make the most out of it! If you have an empty pallet in your trailer, why not use it a clever way? Place it standing on its edge in front of the cargo and place straps according to the picture through the pallet. This can be done before you load the cargo (just let it lean against the front headboard and the strap ends hanging at the sides) and afterwards you just need to place the hook and ratchet and tension. You will quickly and easily secure up to 6 tons of cargo per strap (if you use straps with LC 2500 daN). Friction coefficient has very little to do with the cargo securing in this type of lashing as it mainly rely on the strangth of the securing device.

You can also easily put two straps as shown in the drwaing to form spring lashings and you can drive safely.

If you are using a tarpaulin you can form a spring lashing by just pulling the end of the tarpaulin around the top edge of the cargo. Remember to place the straps in a low angle (<45° between the floor and the strap).

Drive safely,
