Top-over lashing

This is posting number 11 in a series of cargo securing advice and useful hints. These are meant for people who think economically. They do not like to waste time, muscle power, risk their health or pay fines.

Lashing methods Part 1B: Top-over lashing

In the example earlier in post 8, the cargo still needed lashing, as support from the trailer construction and friction were not enough. The effect of friction is included in the formulas when calculating lashing forces. Therefore, even if we have the support from the front headboard we need to generate 2.9 tons of lashing force.  Unfortunately, low friction (µ=0,2) makes it very hard to get any effect from top-over lashing. The force generated by one top-over lashing against sliding is only 0.21 tons with STF 400 daN. So, this means you will need 2.9/0.21=14 straps! Not likely to happen, is it? Top-over lashing is not the right method here due to low friction. Either you need to add more friction or provide additional support for the cargo with other types of lashing.
