Cargo securing for the economically minded

What if no support is available?

This is post number 17 in a series of cargo securing advice and useful hints. These are meant for people who think economically. They do not like to waste time, muscle power, risk their health or pay fines. What if no support is available?

What if you have to place heavy cargo away from front headboard because of weight distribution or other reasons? Usually this results in empty space between the headboard and the cargo. This post is about how you can prevent the cargo from sliding or tipping forward without using a huge number of top-over lashings (see post nr. 11).

One way is to add spring lashings. These can be formed easily with straps around the front top corners or by tensioning an empty pallet standing up towards the end of the cargo or with a fabric made for the purpose. The important thing is to tension the spring lashing in as  small angle as possible between the strap and the cargo platform surface. It is also important to be sure that the lashing point can be loaded with the forces in that angle, i.e. has a lashing Capasity (LC) atleast 2000 daN. See post nr. 26.

In the photo a strong fabric with one top over lashing and two pairs of spring lashings are combined on the same product. It will secure up to 12 tons from moving forward. If no support is available then this kind of a solution is to recommend. When not in use it can just be hanging from the roof and leaning on the headboard. A thin fabric won’t take any cargo space.
