Cargo securing for the economically minded

Loop lashing

This is posting number 12 in a series of cargo securing advice and useful hints. These are meant for people who think economically. They do not like to waste time, muscle power, risk their health or pay fines.

Lashing methods Part 2: Loop lashing

When you throw a strap over the cargo you make a top-over lashing, but if you additionally pull the rest of the strap under the cargo and tension it to the same side as where you started, you form a loop lashing. With loop lashing, remember to always make another one from the other side.

This method is useful lashing against sideways movements in long objects lying down, like pipes, beams etc. If, for example, the cargo is 26 tons of steel pipes and we couldn’t count on any support from the sides, they would need 5 pairs of loop lashings to secure them. This is based on one pair preventing 5.4 tons from sliding sideways if friction is µ=0.2. Loop lashing also effectively prevents higher objects from tipping sideways. Loop lashing across the trailer will not work against movements forward or backward.

Drive safely,
